Project Description:
The graphic quality of the black and white polka dots set against the Neoclassical style of this room creates an interesting commentary concerning the spirit of decoration in the composition of an interior. While the delicate molding and white walls and floor bring a sense of continuity to the space, the polka dot is the true focus of the composition, erasing the purely Neoclassical details of the space. As a decoration, the polka dot works to contrast the genteel nature of the all-white room, turning it into something avantgarde (the antithesis of classicism). Whimsy, or perhaps irony, overwhelm any sense of historicism - leaving the viewer with an overwhelming sense that the interior is not only contemporary but also modern.
