Ryoan-ji Temple was founded by Katsumoto Hosokawa in 1450 and has historical connections with the Hosokawa family. The fusuma paintings in the main hall, which were created in the 1950s, had become badly damaged over time. Morihiro Hosokawa proposed the idea of dedicating new Fusuma-e paintings to the temple during a visit to Ryoan-ji ten years ago. In 2022, Morihiro Hosokawa dedicated thirty-two Fusuma-e paintings, and in 2023, he added eight more at Ryoan-ji Temple in Kyoto. With these contributions, all 40 pieces of the “Unryuzu” series have been completed.
All 40 fusuma paintings will be on display until October 31st. The 32 paintings, excluding the eight dedicated this time, are scheduled to be exhibited from November 1st until the end of March next year (2024).
