The Convent of San Francisco was founded in 1548 along the Choqueyapu River by Fray Francisco de Morales. The original church collapsed due to unusually heavy snowfall from 1608 to 1612 and in 1743 the construction of the new church began.
The Museum San Francisco Cultural Center shares space with the church.

1753 - The closure and the roof of the church's dome were completed
April 23, 1758 - Church was consecrated
1790 - Carved facade is finished
1885 - Construction of its single tower began
1948 - Declared a minor basilica
1950-1960 - Part of the convent was demolished and the atrium reconfigured
1965-2005 - The church was restored, and the part of the convent remained was enabled as a museum
